methods to catch Pike
The pike is rebellious, unpredictable and have fought fish. Hunt and difficult adventure and pleasure simultaneously.
Spinning of pike fishing can be challenging even for experienced fishermen. Tactics that may apply to artificial lures are very naturally the most relevant with more practice than theory.
Specificities of these tactics and different approaches have their differences, depending on the size of the pool. The behavior of the pike is different and therefore should familiarize yourself with the characteristics of pool before venturing in fishing headfirst.
In large ponds pike has an attitude, in terms of nutrition, and places of shelter. That is why it is so important to get acquainted with the nature of the reservoir. Generally, pike prefers to hunt in certain areas where they rely on speed and surprise prey. If you find these places and apply the proper bait, likely to be pleased with their efforts is great. Coastal vegetation, trees, estuaries or pits on the bottom, these are places where you can hang up the pike. Along the coast and around vegetation you can find average pike, while larger and more cautious predators prefer deeper areas with broken terrain at the bottom. For larger pike bet on sinking wobblers to sink at least 5 meters. For this purpose select Wobbler with a large plastic scoop that will provide greater wade of bait. Of course, Wobbler not the only way, can be used players shine, but those with bigger size. Sheer spoons are also well applicable as long as you keep step with well-judged pause.
In small ponds will need to apply a completely different tactics to cheat the pike. The first and basic thing that must be taken into account is that spinning fishing is almost impossible during the summer months. Then vegetation is too thick, so in small ponds with sinningias may be taken only after the water begins to cool. Then small fish retreated and vegetation began to decline significantly. The lure here is rotating and floating Wobbler shone with an average size. These baits are held in surface waters and medium-sized and very importantly their colors to blend with the natural environment. It is known that the color red is particularly preferred bait as easily noticeable and irritating fish.
Good choices are wobblers, composed of two parts (breaking wobblers). Wonderful shots that have embedded in their bodies are also well applicable, as acoustic signals created by the rattling of the balls. The capture of a predator in a limited perimeter is relatively difficult. He is extremely cautious and not risk with the invasion of the unknown and the occasional sight of its stimuli.
If you want more dynamics to orient spinning pike fishing in a river. You will need to walk much of the riverbank to oblavyate wider areas. Identify sites with fallen trees and overgrown with vegetation areas, and areas with moderate current. These places are inhabited by prey of pike and it is not wasted forces procure it.
Preferred bait in the river are rotating shone, wobblers and silicone fish. The velocity of water in rivers is greater and refraction of light blurs colors. So no need to use certain colors and hues bait, allowing you to choose freely among a wide variety of artificial lures.
Spinning of pike fishing is not an easy endeavor. Crowned with success is associated with much practice and experience and experimentation of different tactics and approaches.
When spinning the pike
Spinning the pike in the spring there is little specificity, which is good to know. In swamp predator concentrates mostly around tufts of algae, which lurks in ambush his victims – mostly perch, slanchevki or other types of weed fish inhabiting the pond. For this reason one of the best baits represented big yellow shining, which are lightweight body and a shallow wading. Of this type are bait Mepps Lusox, who represented some of the most reliable weapons for hunting pike. In the mid-depth sections may try to shine on the type Mepps Aglia Long of the numbers 3 and 4 with silver holographic peel. It flashed perfectly mimics babushkite who are potential victims of the pike.
Class and customs of the pike are widely known in fishing circles. To catch a predator is spotted try and fishermen with great experience and less experienced, but even a beginner. For all but the thrill is the same, because at the end of the excursion not everyone can be greeted with good luck. Fans of fishing with live or dead fish are among more fishermen, but the emotions to catch with artificial bait repeatedly outperform static fishing.
Spinning is a classic in the trial of strength between anglers and predators. Approaches, techniques and tactics in pike fishing with artificial bait is a great challenge even for experienced artists. Surprises that brings the pike in different situations, make tough catches her and unpredictable, and this is the charm and thrill in outsmarting the predator. Different fishing conditions require compliance and to assess what baits to target. All these skills are acquired primarily for practice, but theoretical and sometimes prove useful and should not be overlooked. pike tips
Tactics and Baits / Lures in Large Lakes (for Pike)
Pike Fishing in the Great Lakes, reservoirs and ponds, which host brown pike, has its own characteristics and differs from the river or from this small and overgrown ponds. Mostly the differences are with regard to the bait and find shelter predators. Knowing the best places for a pool is always helpful in every fishery. The pike is “landlord” of certain sections, which organizes about planting and relies on the fastest capture prey with a minimum expenditure of energy and strength. Pike dam is very lazy and static of the river, which was forced to withstand the force of the stream and to “do” to larger spaces. That is why when fishing in a large pool of primary importance is the opening of its permanent habitat. These places are usually near aquatic vegetation, submerged trees, rocks, estuaries flowing into the cup dam rivers and streams and abrupt transitions in the bottom relief. In the coastal zone around the bulrush, reeds and algae most often hang medium and small predators in the deep bottom tanks and places with sharp relief the difference of focus larger specimens. The choice of baits is oriented around what the size we expect to catch fish. For medium and small pike in the shallow areas mainly “weapons” are rotating shines with numbers from 3 to 5 and medium-sized floating wobblers. Keeping of these lures is made in the surface and middle water layers and thus their colors are chosen similar to those of usual prey of pike in this basin. It is also necessary to comply with mandatory color of water, light and the presence or absence of wind. Well as a visual stimulus affects the color red is important that it be included in the overall coloration of the bait – it was flashed or Wobbler. In oblavyane deep sea areas that are looking for larger predators, baits are mainly oriented towards sinking wobblers. Select those with Depth up to 4-5 meters, as well as silicones with aggravated heads. Wobblers are selected from among the models with a plastic blade with a larger area, ensuring a deeper draft of the bait. Hard work can do and fluctuating shines from larger sizes or kastmasteri and even sheer shine, led step light breaks. If you have a boat listed baits can oblavyame deep areas using “pump” – a method widely advocated in ice fishing. Even large specimen may be tempted by the spectacular plays in front of his nose artificial bait.
in Small Ponds & Lakes (for Pike)
Completely different tactics for Different seasons and baits to choose when fishing in conditions of limited perimeter and heavily overgrown with algae ponds. In some of them in summer spinning there can not be taken because of the density of vegetation. The Spinning season they began with cooling water withdrawal of small fish in deeper waters Only then are found more serious flaws in that can be made successful “seams” to shine and wobblers. In principle, even in these conditions shall be selected bait Working Depth 1-2 meters. Great job doing floating wobblers composed of two parts, the so-called breaking wobblers. Their movements are a high-frequency fluctuations in horizontal and create very strong stimulation of the lateral line predators. Other suitable baits amongst Wobblers are those that create acoustic signals through the rattle of pellets embedded in their body. By law we can say that the classic fishing in shallow and relatively small ponds is rotating shone. Be selected shines from second to fourth number. Silicone baits can try too, but more lightweight and fine option. This is achieved by instead be combined with a fused lead jig head, used lead shot, cut in the middle. Ball is installed by squeezing with tongs to a single hook with ring. The hook nanizva suitably sized tuister (single or double) or silicone fish.
Competition between predators in a relatively small marsh or lake is much larger than in river or lake. In such an environment experienced predators are very cautious and rarely throw to attack everything passed nearly in front of their eyes. Capture prey in a limited perimeter in the presence of other predators is a serious problem and pike are distributed in strict territories guarded by pesky intruders.
River Fishing for Pike
This is definitely the most emotional and dynamic way to catch pike with artificial bait. Fishing on the river banks with spinning involves a lot of traffic and searches of large areas. Most often selected for its pike habitat areas with slow to moderate current, deep pools and spills, undercut banks and areas with the presence of roots and fallen into the water willows and poplars. Around these shelters are always hanging midget, and the presence of potential prey attracts predators. Pike River is very energetic in the procurement of food and make more transitions necessary for her coverage generally in the river fish predators lure color does not play a decisive role for luck. The strength and speed of the water and refraction of light blurred colors, colors and forms and the predator is attracted mostly by the oscillation and vibration emanating from the bait. So here there is greater freedom of choice of colors and shapes and arsenal of well functioning artificial lures is varied. Only when the water is zamatena, it is appropriate to use bait with bright contrasting colors. They have good visibility even in low light. It is in such conditions and keeping the bait is delayed.
In the rivers are mainly looking for pike with rotating shines, wobblers and silicone fish and tuisteri curve tail. In the game of silicones play a major role softness of the material that enables the lure to play even when holding a place under the influence of the watercourse silicone flicker and make very fine movements and irritating. The optimal length of silicones suitable for pike, varies from 10-15 cm. Wobblers – sinking or floating, are also strong weapon, especially if they fall into the hands of an experienced fisherman. However, it is important to be lodged in the right place at the right time and only then success is guaranteed. Floating models can lead both against and along a river. Sinking work well in the deeper pools or spills in relatively slow progress and modest, short-pulling. This ensures touching the bottom and softer game that resembles a slow moving or damaged fish.
Fishing for pike with a streamer at home does not have many supporters, mostly because of its specificity and lack of practice. In our country of modest size streamer fished mostly salmonids. In Western Europe, large streamer are widely used in fishing is not just pike, but the whitefish and perch. Maybe in our country after the introduction of more fishermen with the possibilities of this interesting bait will expand the circle of practitioners.
The ability to catch pike spinning requires a lot of practice, learning the habits of fish and constant experimentation in terms of tactics and used fishing lures. In other words, fishing for pike with a piece of sheet metal, silicone or balsa wood is a school that taught for years and constantly evolving and improving. What was obsolete before it is not always effective, and now and therefore requires rapid adaptation to new and different. However, it should not lightly ignore the already proven lures that can always bring us success.

Springtime pike fishing strategies
In the northern tier of the U.S and Canada where they thrive, this can start as early as mid-March, although it usually does not begin until April. By the beginning of May, pike are competing with bass and perch for territory and the big northerns become extremely aggressive and territorial.
Pike like to follow a bait for while, checking it out to be sure it truly is something good to eat. But during spawning season, pike will lash out immediately once they sense that something has invaded their jealously guarded turf.
Like bass, pike will stake out sunken logs or other debris. Strangely though, they do not appear as enamored of craggy rock formations. The smallmouth bass love to hide in the holes of rip rap, or up against larger rock formations and Pike will cruise rocky territory, but they are not as fond of this kind of habitat, particularly during spawning season.
When the pike first come into the shallows during the spring, the males often joust with each other. The primary purpose of this activity is to attract and then defend the rights to desirable females. However, pike will also fight just as hard to defend their nesting areas once they’ve been dug out and the eggs laid and fertilized.
Along the shoreline, you can often see signs of these skirmishes as they thrash about, exposing their backs and tails during their frenzied tussles with one another. While the flat, sandy bottoms at the water’s edge are good places to seek out spawning pike, you should also investigate the brooks and other small streams that feed into the lake.
Pike often work their way well upstream into these tiny pieces of water, and that on some days in May, the action in these tributaries far exceeds what you will find out on the lake itself.
The first Cast
When you gently steer your canoe or wade into one of these small feeder streams, it makes good sense to align yourself alongside one of the two banks and make your first casts tight into it.
The Bass & Pike technique
Draw the line back towards you so that you cover as much of the shoreline as possible, your lure or fly hugging the shore as it makes its return. This is also a handy technique for picking up prespawning bass fishing, as they are apt to be competing with the pike for the same prime nesting spots this month.
This retrieving method is a departure from the standard strategy of positioning your boat a couple dozen yards from shore, tossing your bait as close to the edge as possible without getting it snagged, and then bringing the line straight back out into the deeper water where your canoe sits. Most anglers utilize this more remote method of approach so as to prevent the fish from detecting their presence. However, during spawning season, you can dare to be a bit bolder.
The Pike Lures
The lure you can use on pike is a giant silver spoon called the “Williams”.
But since then, That there are plenty of other baits that will elicit a pike’s interest during the spring. Mooselook Wobblers, Daredevils, Kastmasters, and Phoebesare all effective spoon lures, as is the famous Silver Minnow.
Top water enthusiasts should try Rapalas Fat Traps or Bagley’s Bang-O lure. Spinner baits are also very effective if you rip them right across the top of the water.
When fly fishing, normally rig up with a six pound test tippet at the end of an eight to ten foot long leader.
The fish sometimes break your line right at the strike, cutting it with those big teeth, but NOT using a shock leader or a length of steel wire to guard your leader against this eventuality. Leaders can act as an early warning to a fish in the event that water conditions are clear.
With pikeing you can lure fish all year round but only dead bait in the winter as pike swallow the bait in summer so can be dangerous.
I would not deadbait for them Sam, but that’s more because we might deep hook them. Spinning for pike at any time of year does not seem to deep hook any fish and we rarely take them out the water in the warmer months. Never had any problems and they’ve all swam off fine.
Pike Fishing Line
Fishing Line for big/medium size lures
Power Pro is a firm favourite with most pike anglers. Don’t be afraid to use a fairly high breaking strain as it is thinner than mono as you will know. 80 lb is about right for big lures and 30lb for medium size. Get yourself equipped with an unhooking mat plus needle nose pliers forceps and quality cutters. Semi barbed trebles for dead baiting with a bait flag on the barbed hook for easy recognition and attraction. Savagear do make some excellent lures, check out the line through roach plus and 3D Lipster range. The 4 play lures are around 7 years old now but still produce the goods. It’s a big learning curve just enjoy every minute.
As far as braid you can use SpiderWire Code Red but they are out of stock.
Savage gear line
Savage gear line through trout and pike the albino one is probably the best lure out there at the minute.
You can watch videos on YouTube of a lad using Westin, Peruyought them both.
As for Braid, any will do from a tackle shop but I recommend power pro. Bit expensive but it’s worth it.
Pick a weight range for the lures
Pick a weight range for the lures and don’t believe what’s on the rods as some are downright misleading I’ve seen some with 20-80gm ratings that’s best described as hopefully.
Look at a big s it’s tiny and works well on rods that cover 20 gm them look at something that is 80 gm it’s huge in comparison no rod will throw and work both
So pick the rod and work at the mud weight range as being what’s about right
Braid go heavy or go home for lures of two to three ounces say 60-90gm then light braid isn’t good a bare minimum of 0.36mm which equates to two breaking strains depending on if it’s us or eu stuff 50 66lb (it’s exactly the same braid) but for lures that size with a multi you can go a lot heavier as the multi won’t restrict casting.
Lures savage – they are plastic overpriced Chinese made stuff there are far cheaper things out there where you are not paying for the brand name and marketing bomber salmo etc.
Bait casters – They work better for pike with heavier lures personally.
Take a bit of getting used to for casting I still get the odd over-run on the reel and end up with a snakes wedding to untangle. Best way to set them up to avoid over-runs is to click to freespool hold the rod up and let the lure fall under its own weight to the ground/ water. If it over runs adjust the tightness on the spool till it doesn’t. Also with regards to the rod I’d personally avoid single handed ones “I changed to one with a longer butt as on the single handed one I’ve got hooked into a upper double”.
If you prefer to fish for pike with spinning gear, this same rule applies – tie my lures directly to the line, without adding a steel leader or a snap swivel.
If you absolutely must put something on your line before the lure, try an all black, flat finish swivel. It’s far less detectable than the shiny gold or silver ones.
Since most anglers spend a lot of time thinking about what lures, what weight line, or which rod they should use when pike fishing, they often forget about the importance of the reel they select. One of the best is to use the very fast reelsmade of aluminum that features a 6:1 gear ratio. Daiwa’s, Shimano or Mitchell – Any one of these three workhorse reels will satisfy the angler who prefers the proven, tested reliability that comes with these manufacturer’s classic designs. All of these modern reels are designed to handle six pound test line, weigh about eight ounces each, and retail for under $100, making them a good value to the pike angler.
Been respooling some spinning reels today and spent quite a while trying to learn the FG knot. This video below that was previously posted on here is a huge help:
At any time of year
With pikeing you can lure fish all year round but only dead bait in the winter as pike swallow the bait in summer so can be dangerous.
I would not dead bait for them, but that’s more because we might deep hook them. Spinning for pike at any time of year does not seem to deep hook any fish and we rarely take them out the water in the warmer months. Never had any problems and they’ve all swam off fine.
Take a few rods, go with someone experienced use deadbait in winter and can chuck a lure, plug about in between bites etc, it’s really important you go with someone competent in unhooking and handling fish especially on a boat where space is limited.
Pike fishing – Line weight when using the braid/leader system.
The flouro leader system is a good one from many standpoints (cost savings, easy to swap out for varying conditions, etc.) As others have mentioned, you don’t need to fill your entire reel with flouro. One thing I will mention is if you are fishing with a shallow diving crankbait or lure, you might want to consider using mono instead. It floats, whereas flouro sinks. It also has more stretch, which for fish with soft mouths like trout, it could a better choice. In very clear water, flouro is the better bet due to much less visibility to the fish. For those of you who already knew this, sorry for boring you.
You can also use the same Braid + Leader combo as Marvin pretty much – as far as lb test. On the 50 lb Braid, use a 25 lb test mono when frog fishing on that heavier setup. The preferred braid line is Sufix Performance and have been using Vanish for pike and smaller fish and BPS Fluoro for bass. If you are fishing sub surface, mainly use fluoro because the line sinks. for any top water lure or top water presentation, use mono, because mono suspends. The leader is about 10′ to 15′ tied to the braid.
Oulton broads or beccles river
Spinning is more a summer method when pike are prepared to use more energy for a meal would try dead baits but yeah would spin along beccle keep moving and trying different lures. Beccles, under the bridge is a bit of a hot spot for spinning but stay mobile as they are less active.
On photo: Caught at beccles with fire eel lure. 18.4lb. Waters fairly coloured so use bright colours.
